Did you know that one out of every four Los Angeles children lives below the poverty line? California has the highest child poverty rate in the nation with 1,618,889 low-income children. Los Angeles County is at the top with 27.8% of our children living in poverty. By the 3rd grade, these students are, on average, already two years behind their peers in reading and math.
We work closely with and in public schools and many of the youth we serve cannot afford a backpack or the list of supplies they need to learn. For those living under the federal poverty line, often there are no funds left over for books and school supplies - even the basics of pencils and paper. When these supplies are not available in the home, schoolwork and homework often goes undone.
The need is great. And while teachers and many school districts do what they can to help students obtain supplies, we need to do more.
Friends LA's Annual Back to School Drive was launched to close the educational gap for in-need K-5 students. New backpacks full of essential, grade-appropriate school supplies are collected and delivered to our youth. By donating to Friends LA's supply drive, you can ensure all our youth have the tools and support they need to succeed in school.
